Born in New York City in 1950, Roger Ballen is one of the best contemporary artists and has lived and worked in Johannesburg, South Africa for almost 30 years. It was here, in rural South Africa, that he discovered the “dorps” which he began to photograph and document. From 1982 onwards he has produced eleven books and his style has evolved from photo-journalism to a unique artistic vision.
For nearly 40 years, Roger Ballen has established the fundamental elements of his work that are actual but unsettling and strange, logical but impossible; the series of Ballen's work set the tone for an evolving and increasingly complex body of work. It is Ballen’s images that transform the physical structure into a metaphorical and fictitious place, a chimera of shadows, cryptic shapes, inexplicable figures, disjointed body parts, and enigmatic drawings. The photographs are like images from a waking dream, compelling and thought-provoking, formally sophisticated and filled with layers of rich detail. He specializes in the black and white photography, which he thinks is the most direct way to get down to the core of the fact. The sense of disjointedness that has been a part of Ballen's work for over a decade comes into full focus, delivering a sort of tarot card mash up with unlimited interpretive possibility.
Roger Ballen’s work has been shown in important institutions throughout the world and is represented in many Museum Collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

SHADOW CHAMBER In the Shadow Chamber project (2001 – 2004) , the mysterious cell-like rooms that Roger Ballen photographs in Johannesburg, South Africa, are actual places, but they are unsettling and strange, logical but impossible; their walls are covered with scribbled drawings, stains and dangling wires, the floors are strewn with bizarre props and artefacts. Dogs, rabbits and kittens wander into the frame or are stuffed into unlikely containers. The humans and animals in Ballen’s photographs appear isolated and lost, yet strangely empowered at the same time. The resulting images are allegories of lived experiences and the surreal takes on the human condition.
