Familiar materials have specific uses and life expectancies that add structure and comfort to daily procedures. My work is concerned with what else we can know about these commonplace items by looking at them after they have served their purpose. Collecting objects from my apartment and the city, I construct still lives, both outside and in a studio environment to investigate formal juxtapositions of organic and inorganic materials. I use photographic space to fragment and isolate temporary constructions in order to explore the aesthetic and surface values of refuse.

A Convers o de S o Paulo is comprised of 9 contemporary altarpieces–each consisting of three panels. A Convers o de S o Paulo ties these conversions together, from the colonial past to the political, religious, and cultural present. Like many places in the Western world, S o Paulo–and Brazil as a whole–is a place of constant conversion. Brazil has seen a conversion from a monarchy to a democracy, and during the making of this work was in the midst of the traumatic conversion from a developing nation to an industrial and economic powerhouse. There has been a conversion of culture as well, with American brands and symbols leaving their traces on the young people that don them.

Every breath we drew explores the power of identity, desire, and connection through portraits of myself and others. Working within the framework of queer experience and from my actively constructed sense of masculinity, my portraits examine the intersection between private, individual identity and the search for intimate connection with others. The photographs of men and masculine individuals act as a kind of mirror; they depict the type of gentle masculinity I am attracted to, yet also the kind I want to embody. Similarly, the photographs of relationships speak to a drive to be seen, understood, and desired through the eyes of a another person; a reflection of the self as the ultimate intimate connection.

I make photographs and write about relationships. Through diverse combinations of images, memoir, fiction, and book forms, I create vignettes exploring the complex specificities of family and place, the awkwardness of communication, the vagaries of attraction, and the tension between the lyrical and the mundane. In my various projects, I use photographs and language in conjunction, each recontextualizing the other to expand the narrative possibilities and experience of stories.
