   前言:“纽约学派”通常是指二战期间和之后推动当代艺术发展的艺术家们,他们大多居住在纽约及周边。当时,前卫艺术的领导权从饱受战争蹂躏的欧洲转向纽约。自此,纽约一直处于世界艺术领域的领先地位。同时,纽约也在艺术和摄影教育领域占据重要地位。

  本次“纽约学派”是一个以美国艺术家以及师生的摄影作品为主的邀请展。作品内容鼓舞人心,形式多种多样,体现了纽约摄影教育的前瞻性,吸引更多人前往纽约进修。从审美角度来说,作品呈现了摄影题材的宽泛性,从抽象摄影到人像摄影,从合成摄影到如实摄影,它所强调的是摄影的宽度和广度。

  "The New York School(s)" commonly refers to those artists who participated in the development of contemporary art in or around New York City during and after World War II when leadership in avant-garde art shifted from war-torn Europe to New York. New York has maintained a dominant position in the art world ever since. New York also has developed a foremost position in the world of art and photographic education.

“The New York School(s)," is an invitational exhibition featuring the work of artist/teachers in the U.S. and their students. The work is both exciting and varied and represents well the opportunities for the advanced study of photography in New York. Aesthetically, the work represents a wide range of photographic possibilities, from abstraction to portraiture, manipulated to straight. It highlights the width and breadth of the photographic practice today.

  策展人简介: 

  苏珊·都利,新闻摄影记者,纪实摄影师,策展人和教育家。获得伊利诺伊大学新闻与大众传媒理学学士学位以及长岛大学波斯特分校摄影美术硕士学位。

  Susan Dooley is a photojournalist and documentary photographer, curator and educator. She graduated with a BS in Journalism and Mass Communications from the University of Illinois and an MFA in Photography from Long Island University, C.W. Post campus.

  She is presently a Full Professor and Chair of the Art Department at the Nassau Community College in New York. As an artist, Ms. Dooley’s work has been exhibited widely in galleries, museums, libraries and universities, hospitals and churches in the U.S., Canada, Russia, and Asia. She is a founding member of foto gallery in Huntington, NY. Additionally, she has served in curatorial roles in both China and the U.S.

  Jerry Birchfield’s practice is rooted in a concern with the unstable relationship between the pictorial and the material conditions of photography. Perceptually destabilized occurrences within his work help to acknowledge the terms by which the photographs operate. These unstable or conflicting elements emphasize that the photographs are not singularly pictorial nor material, but contingent on multiple components. All aspects of the photograph including the pictorial, planar, spatial, material, process, production narrative, and perception are pointed to as having the potential to produce meaning. Conflicts between these components highlight the interval in a shift from one point to another, between one determination and the next - in which understanding is questioned then reaffirmed or changed.

We fear potential.

  It’s obvious that photographers take pictures of what they see, but what isn’t always obvious are the lengths we go to in order to see certain things, often traveling the world in search of the unseen, the new, and the exotic. We forge our careers chasing celebrities, wars, politicians, moments, light, and horizons. We create our professional iconographies as much by force of will as by careful observation.

  Mark Fitton’s work focuses on portraits of close friends and family placed into strange scenarios devised by the artist himself. The photographs of his subjects are very performative as he captures a gesture or expression that suggests a greater narrative beyond the constraints of the frame. Much of his work is inspired by cinematography, with use of dramatic, almost menacing, forms of lighting and precise placement of his subjects in these film still like images. Fitton gives his viewers the freedom to create a narrative around the subjects in his still scenes based on the clues and small details he reveals in his photographs.

  Anna Shteynshleyger was born in Moscow, Russia (1977) and emigrated to theUnited States in 1992. She received her MFA from Yale University in 2001 and the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2009. She has held solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), MotiHasson Gallery (New York), Dvir Gallery in Tel Aviv and most recently a survey exhibition at The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. Shteynshleyger's work has been included in numerous group exhibitions at the International Center of Photography in New York and The Jewish Museum, Murray Guy Gallery, the Houston Museum of Fine Art, Museum of Contemporary Photography (Chicago) and The Turner Contemporary Museum in Kent, England, among others.

  The series includes interiors, portraits, still lives, and landscapes, yet questions the genre distinctions themselves. Alluding to the body and domesticity, the photographs transform the ordinary objects into strangely eerie and psychologically fraught semi-abstract compositions. I am interested in exploring one's inner personal exile and profound beauty as redemptive and liberating. Because of the origin and cultural whereabouts of the portrayed subjects is often unclear, the photographs create a suspended sense of place and challenge the very definition of cultural identity. Although photographed on different continents this work is in essence a record of a place and people albeit physically spread over half the world.

  From the series 20 Shiny Objects, these images explore the impact and change of enlarging objects far beyond life size, allowing the objects take on different contexts within the space they occupy. The bullets become sculptural objects, removed from their intended purpose.

  Bruce Strong is an Emmy nominated multimedia storyteller, associate professor and chair of the Multimedia Photography and Design department at Syracuse University’s S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications. Bruce, a former staff photographer at The Orange County Register, has shot in nearly 60 countries and has earned numerous awards and two fellowships, The Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowship at the University of Michigan and the Knight Fellowship at Ohio University. In 2010, Bruce was honored with a Meredith Teaching Recognition Award from Syracuse University and the National Press Photographers Association's Robin F. Garland Educator Award.
