Pointing to the target of a concrete mutual understanding between different cultures, the 2016 exhibition proposes a dialogue between Chinese and foreign photographers. When mediating between people who pertain to different cultural background, misunderstanding and mutual incomprehension are common: just dialogue and comprehension present a valid solution to this contact-contrast.
Photography and visual art represent a direct medium which is able to build bridges between cultures, it is a universally understood language which breaks cultural borders and differences, underlying the humanity on the basis of our being. The diverse cultural background and personal experience act as a lens through which the photographer sees the world: the differences in visual perception and cultural comprehension enrich the spectator possibility of awareness of one same phenomenon.
The Belgian and Chinese photographers Sanne de Wilde and Peng Xiangjie express the existence of a surreal dwarves’ empire in southern China: they use respectively digital and traditional photography to capture the strong humanity of those who visitors perceive as freaks.
Italian photographers Tania and Lazlo think of ancient classics and masterpieces as a living process, that’s what moves them to remake hem through photographic medium, while the Beijing based artist Pan Yue rethinks them in a Chinese traditional perspective by apologizing to the masters of art history.
Nuclear power is the common theme Pedro Pinheiro and Li Yang focus on: the first of them shoots in Chernobyl after many years from a nuclear incident are gone, the second one focussing on the unknown site 404, where he’s been spending his childhood. Report of a disgrace in the first case, and nostalgic home diary in the second one, the two perception let us stand on different points perspective point, let us perceive both the life and death who emanates from the nuclear power.
