The Bright Invisible was curated and organized by Ariel Shanberg and Stephen Chalmers, both Members of the Board of Directors for the Society for Photographic Education (SPE).

The seven artists in The Bright Invisible and their works were chosen from the Member Portfolios section of the SPE website (www.spenational.org).

SPE is an organization that provides and fosters an understanding of photography as a means of diverse creative expression, cultural insight, and experimental practice. Through its interdisciplinary programs, services and publications, SPE seeks to promote a broader understanding of the medium in all its forms through teaching and learning, scholarship, and criticism.

The work of Millee Tibbs, a professor at Wayne State University (Detroit, MI), involves photographic landscapes, then printing them and folding them into origami shapes before rephotographing them.

The photographs of Edie Bresler, a professor at Simmons College (Boston, MA), of small stores selling lottery tickets, are a meditation on income disparities and the on the use of lotteries to cover state budget shortfalls.

Noritaka Minami, a professor at Loyola University (Chicago, IL), photographed the Nakagin Capsule Tower, a structure envisioned as the future of urban living in postwar Japan, but in turn became a metaphor for a utopian vision that never materialized.

Sarah Cross, a professor at Cazenovia College (Syracuse, NY), creates photographs in which insects (mealworms, ladybugs and crickets) become decorative elements within a domestic space.

D’Angelo Lovell Williams, an MFA candidate at Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY), photographs black male strangers as an exploration of their masculinity and beauty.

Kris Sanford, a professor at Central Michigan University (Mount Pleasant, MI), creates implied queer sexual intimacy through appropriating photographs from the 1920-50s of men or women together.

Rana Young, an MFA candidate at University of Nebraska–Lincoln (Lincoln, NE), created staged portraits of her partner of six years to explore gender roles and identity.
